Breast Cancer Awareness

http://www.knowcancer.com/blog/
This weekend, I was downtown on my way to Trader Joe's after my Saturday morning Zumba class when I heard crowds cheering and clapping. I looked around to see what all of the commotion was about. I noticed a large group of men and women with running and walking gear on, pink and red shirts and other breast cancer awareness paraphernalia. I began to think to myself, why haven't I ever participated in something like this? This isn't my first time feeling this way, but this day was just different. I mean, who doesn't know someone who is battling or who succumbed due to this horrible disease. I honestly felt guilty for not being apart of such a great cause.

According to the National Breast Cancer Institute, there have been 207,090 new cases in females and  1,970 new cases in males in 2010 alone. In 2010, 39,840 women and 390 men died from it. If those numbers don't effect you then perhaps you need to take a trip to a local oncology clinic and witness how many people are taking chemotherapy. Surprising, the patients you will find there aren't as old as you would think. Many are just a few years your senior or within the same generation. There's honestly nothing more life changing and encouraging than to speak with someone battling a life threatening disease.

Cancer is a disease that threatens the lives of thousands around the world. Fighting off such a disease becomes a life long battle. It saddens me that there isn't a cure. My boyfriend is currently working on a Ph.D. in molecular toxicology, so I know that people are definitely working hard to find a cure. Encouragement and prayer is what these people need. Prayer for their strength to continue to fight and not give up... Prayer for the Lord to lay the ingredients for a cure on someone's mind... Prayer for the families who are dealing with the loss of a loved one over this.

So my plan is to try to get more involved. I want to one day do a walk-a-thon or a 3K or something. Not just for the sake of fitness but for the sake of supporting those women and men and families who need it. We all never know where our future may lead us. Health is like life. It's literally here today and can be gone tomorrow. Increase your awareness... increase your prayer life and increase your support for a cure.
