Is Real Music Dead?

http://main-fm.org/2011/05/
I had a convo with my good friend the other day about the quality of today's music. For starters, this garbage that some are calling artistic expression is clearly corrupting our youth. In particular, as much as we love Trey Songz, it's not cute to hear a child sing his songs. What does an 8 year old know about the neighbors knowing their name? Surprisingly, the kids of this generation know a heck of a lot about it. Music of the old school and even my childhood seemed to leave more to the imagination. I was just listening to Chicago's V103 station and Teddy P.'s "Turn Off the Lights" was playing. Although we can insinuate what he's talking about, he still leaves so much to the imagination.

Aside from the music tainting our youth, why is it that most of it contains no substance? We have people rapping about "Short Bus Shawty". Some other people rapping about "Wal-mart". Nicki Minaj is steadily screaming at us. What ever happen to putting your heart and soul into music? Maybe that's why I'm such a huge fan of old school R&B and Neo-Soul. Neo-Soul seems to embark the heart of real music. Artists like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Rapheal Saadiq, Avery Sunshine, Adele, Esperanza Spalding, Timothy Bloom, Corinne Baily Rae, Chrisette Michelle, Maxwell and a host of others are really still doing a good job at holding my attention and producing some reasonably good music. Sadly these artists sometimes fail to get much of the deserved attention for their high quality music. Seems as if society is more worried about the 36-24-36 body style who can shake her rump a thousand times per minute but may not spit any decency from her lips.

I miss the music of the 90s... I was riding in the car today and Envogue's "Hold on To Your Love" came on. I normally don't blast my music loud, but for the sake of a good song, every neighboring car will hear me and see me jamming. Artists like Envogue, SWV, Whitney Houston, Silkk, Jodeci, Boyz II Men, etc are in heavy rotation on my iPod. What happened to musical greats like this who didn't need all the glitz, the vulgarity or the obnoxious lyrics to make each and every one of us know what they were feeling. Real musical talent is what I crave, so since the radio can't normally quench my crave, I guess I'll stick to my Pandora stations.
