Mary Jane, played by Union, is a successful news anchor with a lifestyle that just doesn't fit. She doesn't have the best of luck with men. Her family members are very needy and some are moochers. Her mother is over the top and played by none other than the woman I will always call Shug Avery (Margaret Avery). She tries to fix everyone's problems but doesn't seem to not be able to focus on her own. She has a few love interests, one being Andre, played by Mr. Omar Hardwick and the other is David, played by Stephen Bishop. Her story unfolds further in episode one with lots of twists and turns.
The show appears to be beautifully written and although you may not be experiencing all the things that she is at once, I do think that a woman can relate to her in some area or another. Some controversy exists with this show just as any other. Some wonder why she has to sleep around or why some scenes are so intimate. My response to that is that it's 2014, most people are not walking around here chase or holy-moly. I think she's portrayed quite realistically. It's true that many of our African American female actresses seem to have to be sexual prowess on camera to gain attention, but I think a show about an up-right female who is waiting for marriage and who does everything right may be a little far fetched, not relatable for most and boring. Was I shocked just like everyone else with how candid the show is in dialogue and scene choice? Hell yes! Will I stop watching because of this? Hell no!
I also must add that after watching Union and Hardwick's interview on "106 & Park", they have some SERIOUS chemistry that they can't hide. I mean I get it... he's gorgeous and so is she. I've been a big fan of her beauty since her Bring It On and Sister, Sister days. But they're like children with it. They're like our African American version of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. I don't want to say mark my word, but I don't know how much they can fend each other off. I think they would make a beautiful couple if he wasn't married and she wasn't trying to be ride or die with D Wade. Disrespectful much? I can't help but question if they've ever went further off camera. Hmmmmm...
If you haven't checked the show out yet, what are you waiting for? Being Mary Jane airs on Tuesdays at 9c. If you've watched the show or movie already, what are your thoughts? Like it? Love it? Hate it? Share your say.
