BET Awards 2012

Source
Another year is half way over, and this always marks the time for the BET Awards. Over the past few years, the awards have really shown themselves to be underwhelming yet I consistently tune in just to see what's going on and tweet about it. This year was no different. A big deal was being made because Samuel L. Jackson was the host. He honestly was a big yawn. The best moments for me were the Whitney Houston tribute with Monica, Brandy, Cissy, Ray, and Chaka, the Maze ft Frankie Beverly tribute, performance and acceptance speech, Rev Al Sharpton's speech, Chris Brown's performance, and the fact that my brother had the nerve to ask would there be a Rodney King Tribute. Kim K made an appearance with her beau Kanye. She really must feel like she's "arrived" since not only does she get to attend such events but she gets seated front and center with the Knowles-Carters. This could be a really good look for her.

Many people found humor in Soulja Boy's tears as Cissy sung for Whitney. I really didn't find it that funny. I think anyone who has a mother, which is just about everyone, could understand the strength that had to have taken for her to be able to sing on stage for her deceased daughter. To me, it showed that despite this hard demeanor he and many other rappers try to present, he has a heart. The way life is supposed to take it's course, you should one day bury your parents in old age. It shouldn't be the other way around. It was terribly sad at the time to hear of Whitney's death and extremely touching to see how her family and friends now have enough strength to pay homage to her. My mother has always been a fan of Cissy's... I beg to differ but I still can feel the soul of the woman behind that voice when she sings.

Many people commented on Frankie Beverly's voice. I know that in the past he was rumored to have throat cancer. I've seen and heard him about 3 times in person. The last time was at Jazz Fest a few years ago. He had gotten to a point where he couldn't really sing the last two songs, but it didn't matter. He hummed his way through and the audience sung it for him. That's when you know you are just that amazing... when an audience can ignore your vocal limitations and still have a good time in your presence. Other than that, the rest was all garbage. This generation lacks the presence of real soul singers. I did, however, enjoy Melanie Fiona's performance. Her dress though... not so much.

Now can we discuss the resurrection of D'Angelo? I had wondered the whole show whether we would get fine "How Does It Feel" D'Angelo or if we would get crazy, been to jail a few times for weed and picking up prostitutes D'Angelo. And well... looks like we got the latter. He was equipt with a vest, sweats and combat boots and a twist out that was nothing to brag about to your mama. But his voice is still quite amazing.

As far as who were the best dressed of the night, I believe most of my Twitter followers can agree that Beyonce was the best dressed, followed by Angela Bassett and Chaka Khan. Chaka looks amazing for 59 years old. Since the last time we've seen her, she's lost an incredible amount of weight. One thing I must acknowledge is that she's always been a pretty woman with an amazingly big voice.
