Not quite the Caribbean getaway you may have had in mind but it was just right on time for my taste buds. The place is called The Rum House located on the infamous Magazine Street in New Orleans. I found this place randomly on Yelp and couldn't resist the delicious pics of tacos and the idea of an all rum beverage menu. Lol. The worst thing I can say about this place was that the wait was atrocious. But what can one expect of a Friday night in New Orleans. There was seating outside but since it was a bit nippy out, we decided that inside seating would do. Had we known that it was going to take this long waiting outside anyway, we could have just popped a squat and at happily with the other diners. We started out with the mango guacamole. It amazes me how I used to hate guacamole as a kid simply b/c of the color. So I always had a fear of avocado until recently. Simply put this dish was amazing. It came garnished with pickled sweet potatoes, onions and purple cabbage.
How can you come to a Carribbean restaurant or a restaurant in New Orleans without having an adult beverage? I wouldn't know b/c it's been a long time that I've done that. We ordered a pineapple mojito and a "Painkiller" which is some concoction with lots of rum and pina colada.
We decided to order "Mr. Bigg's Plate" which included 4 tacos of our choice and two sides. We went with roasted poblano & manchego polenta. We tried the brisket, creole rib, chopped shrimp and the crispy fish tacos. They were all superb and my favorites were the chopped shrimp and creole rib. We enjoyed them so much til we ordered 2 more tacos to top it off.
Magazine street is truly one of the precious gems of New Orleans. A few years ago I explored a few night spots on this street, recently went shopping with my sister, tried Pinkberry there and tried a cupcake shop, yet I am still guilty of not making it a habit to explore this street and area more. I truly enjoyed this restaurant and can promise that if the Lord says the same, I'll be back. :)
