Like most people, I absolutely hate it when women have a face that's caked up with makeup. It's important to me for my makeup to look as natural as possible.
Tip #1- A little goes a loooong way! Unless you are in a wedding, doing a photo shoot, dressing up for Halloween or going out on the town, there is no need to wear a lot of makeup. I know that many women are anti-makeup, but I don't care who you are or how beautiful you think you or your skin is, you need a little bit just to bring out your features. If you'd like to keep it simple, try Elf's Complexion Perfection just to knock the shine off of your face, a sheer or nude colored lip gloss, enhance your brows and add a little mascara and eyeliner to make your eyes pop. My favorite mascara right now L'oreal's Double Extend Mascara with Lash Boosting Serum. I don't know that it's actually made my lashes grow as it proposes since I already have pretty long lashes, but I love how full my lashes look and long. I'm normally an advocate of liquid mascara but I recently decided to switch over to Maybelline's Eyestudio gel eyeliner in "blackest black". It goes on just as thin or as thick as I like it and I don't have to wait on it to dry before opening my eyes. A must have that my mom always made sure that my sister and I had and I now always carry in my purse or wristlet is a makeup sponge. Not just any makeup sponge, but one of those red makeup sponges. I always find mine at Sally's Beauty Supply. These are great for getting the oil out of your skin during the day without applying more makeup. The thicker ones are the best but something is better than nothing.
Tip #2- Switch your foundation to achieve a different look. I find that after I find a foundation that I love, about 6 months later I'm dying to have a different look and try something new. I was recently wearing the Make Up Forever powder foundation from Sephora but have decided to make a switch. Lately I've been in love with Mac's Mineralize SkinFinish Natural Powder. Although I can usually wear the "Dark" powder, my sister gave me a "deep dark" mineral powder that she wasn't using. After trying the foundation I realized that it made me look like an Oompa Loompa. Lol. So I didn't want to discard the foundation so I devised a way to tone down the reddish undertones of this powder. I decided to put my Elf Complexion Perfection to use as a base and then apply the "Deep dark" mineral powder by mac. I always give my cheeks a little bit of color with some type of blush. My favorite blush at the moment is Covergirl & Olay's Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in "Lush Berry 230". It's a cream blush that I use to highlight my cheekbones with the enclosed sponge first and then blend with my foundation blush. My second foundation for more dressy days or just when I feel like being different is L'Oreal's New True Match Super-Blendable Makeup liquid foundation in "creme cafe W8". I usually dab a little of this foundation on a foundation wedge and then blend with a foundation brush. Again, I highlight my cheeks with blush.
Tip #3- Multicolored shadows are not needed everyday. I love multicolored shadows when they are done in moderation, but what I've noticed is that if you wear shadows everyday then you never truly look different when it counts. I've seen brides who always wear makeup not look any different on their big day. My idea is to tone it down on days when you don't need it. I simply wear eyeliner and mascara on a daily basis. I only wear shadows on Sunday's for church, date night or if I'm going to a special event. An alternative to this is to wear more natural colors for daily wear. My favorite combo of shadows to achieve my natural looks is white (which appears more silvery in person), several shades of gold and brown. Maybe one day I'll have to post a tutorial on how I wear my shadows. Not that I'm a professional but I've been asked in the past to do a bride's makeup and several bridesmaids in weddings that I've been in. So I figure that I must be doing something right.
Tip #4- Be mindful of your eyebrows! I like many other women have to enhance my brows on a daily basis. I've tried everything from drawing them on to painting them with this gel brow kit from Elf. I was initially in love with the gel brow kit from Elf but then realized that it really made my brows look painted on. Lately I've opted to just filling in where necessary which is all I need since my ends grow very thin thanks to my Mama. Lol. I've been using Ybf's (Your Best Friend): Automatic eyebrow pencil in "universal taupe", which has a brow/mascara brush on one side and an adjustable pencil on the other side.
Tip #5- Drugstore makeup sometimes works just as good as the more expensive name brands. For some reason Mac and Sephora have become more popular in recent years. It's as if everyone must buy everything from big name stores and big name brands. I'll be the first to let you know that I refuse to pay $15/shadow or whatever the price is nowadays for eye shadows from Mac. I own shadows from Target or Walmart. Actually my favorite eye pallet is one that's several years old from Fashion Fair, which used to be like the black woman makeup company of the world! I've tried a few items from Elf Cosmetics online but have yet to try their shadows. A tip to make the color pop on some shadows that normally go on dull or not as smooth as you like is to dampen your shadow brush with a little bit of water. I use this every single time I apply makeup. Regardless of where you get your makeup from, price or name shouldn't matter. Use what works for you.
