Just spoke with a friend who is about to hit her one year hair anniversary so it inspired me to write this blog. It's been a while since I've talked about this, and I thought it would be nice to take your minds off my usual posts about food. Lol. So I'm officially about 5 months into my natural hair journey. When I went home to NOLA last month, I opted to get a sew in. My sew-ins last for about 2-2.5 months which is perfect because I'll be back home by then and able to get it properly removed by my awesome sister who's a stylist. I really wanted to do a big chop, but my mother and sister talked me out of it. It's really sad that in America as a woman of color, I have to be concerned about how society will view me or how a potential employer may perceive my natural hair versus relaxed hair or hair extensions. There have been so many cases about how natural hair is considered unprofessional in corporate America and unattractive by men of all races and ages. Truth of the matter is that a large part of me doesn't care. If an employer, or a man for that matter, can not except me for who I am, then don't accept me at all. By the same token, this is all so easy to say while I'm not on an interview being offered some large salary and need to pay bills. I'm hoping that the ideas I have for my natural hair, my personality and skills that I possess will still land me the job that I desire and not cause people to be so judgmental. It's funny how some things in life are such a double standard. If we considered the natural appearance of other races to be unprofessional then I'm sure we'd be on CNN immediately and there would be a million activist out declaring equality. It's whatever though. I believe that being natural can be beautiful. I think the world needs some liberation from this jacked up mindset that we have. Straight hair is not the only form of beautiful hair. Even if one chose to wear straight hair, it doesn't HAVE to be chemically processed. I don't know how long this natural phase of my life will last, but I intend to show y'all how to rock it. ;)![]() |
