There is truly no place like home. So I'm back in Nola, visiting fam and friends and couldn't resist going to some of my favs.

So many favor options
For the first time in idk how many years, it's actually warm but breezy in May in Nola. Regardless I could not resist my craving for a snowball. So I just had to stop at Pandora's on S. Carrollton. This is an old fav of mine. I was introduced to Pandora's while teaching a chemistry summer program at my undergrad, Xavier University. I ordered a medium half banana and pina colada snowball and nachos with extra cheese. Sadly they were out of hot tamales. :( I've been craving those for months now. If you have never had an authentic Nola snowball, not from an imitation stand in Tx or northern LA but from actual Nola, then you really don't know what you are missing.

Crawfish!!! Yeah baby!
Next stop was to fill my crawfish craving. So a friend of mine brought me to Live Bait on Hammond Hwy where we devoured 10 lbs of crawfish and potatoes. Yum! I know non-Southerners usually turn their noses up at "crawdaddies", "crayfish" or "mudbugs" but seriously, it's the best thing crawling during the spring and summer in New Orleans. If seasoned to perfection, you are instantly in food heaven.
So my mother and sister are probably the most restaurant eating people that I know. Today we ate at another fav of mine... Acme Oyster House. No, I'm not a fan of oysters. Even after that sensual scene on the movie Jumping the Broom where the chef feeds Meagan Good the oyster, I'm still not a fan. Lol. My taste buds were set on crawpuppies (hush puppies with a crawfish dressing inside), seafood gumbo, and a catfish platter that includes sweet potato fries and hush puppies.

Seafood gumbo!

Catfish platter :)
Eating food at this rate, I'm sure there will be multiple parts or posts on this topic. Lol.
Plum Street Snoballs are way better. The ice is pulverized, thereby melting in your mouth. However, Pandora has a panoply of flavors. You should try the Creole Cream Cheese snoball from TeeEva's on Magazine across from XU Prep; it has rum in it and is delicious! I always get tipsy lol. Far as food, Deanie's has my heart...Stuffed shrimp, seafoood gumbo, and the catfish platter....winning!
ReplyDeleteBut honestly, the food in the lafayette,La area is way better. It is authentic, not to say nola food isnt, but I feel that nola food has become too commercialized. If you're ever in lafayette, go to blue dog cafe on pinhook and have the catfish bluedog. best meal i ever had in my life.
I've always wanted to go to Plum Street snowballs. Maybe ou should take me in August when I come back. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd you are right. I've heard Lafayette has good food. They have the best homemade boudin EVER!!
