Music + Friends + Food = A Great Time

Last night we met up with some friends at a place called Cafe Club Fais Do Do. I'm from N.O. and took French most of my life so I know that fais do do is a Cajun dance. So I knew I'd be in for a N.O. style party. The venue was surprisingly larger than I expected. There was lots of reserved seating but luckily we were able to grab a few chairs in the back.

The entertainment for the night was this band called Vaud and the Villains. This band was a 19 piece band complete with singers, dancers, banjo player, pianist, trumbone player, trumpet player, base player, guitar player, violinist, saxophonist, drummer and the list goes on. The website describes them as a "19 piece 1930s New Orleans orchestra and cabaret show". The entire band with an exception of one vocalist are all from L.A. but have adapted the N.O. style Jazz music that many of us love. The odd thing was that most of their songs were church or gospel songs or had Christian underlying themes. I kind of felt like this may have been the band's way of bringing people to Christ. Many of the people there had no clue of what was going on and just danced away. I thought it was a brilliant idea.

The night ended with us in a booth at a Jewish deli called Canter's. I don't think I've ever really eaten Jewish food before but anyone who knows me knows that I'm pretty fearless when it comes to trying new foods. A true foodie I am indeed. As far as presentation, this place looked every bit like an expanded corner store or hole in the wall with dim lighting, ugly flooring, random foolery on the walls and hideous old school booths. It probably isn't the most clean place in the world to prep a meal nonetheless eat one, but when it's late night and you are told the food is superb and it's a Los Angeles staple, how can you say no? We tried to potato knish with gravy which was actually pretty good. I decided to go with what all the regulars recommended which was the pastrami Reuben. Its a deli sandwich served warm on rye with mozzarella cheese and sauerkraut with a bed of steak fries. I added some spiced mayo that they served it with and some spicy mustard and the sandwich was an instant hit. I don't know that I'll go back to this place under any other circumstances besides to soothe a late night hunger pang, but the food was absolutely wonderful. I wasn't a huge fan of the rye bread especially since once it's toasted it scratched the heck out of the roof of my mouth. Overall it was a great experience with friends and an event better experience for my taste buds. Lol. Stop by at Canther's if you are ever in SoCal.
