I sincerely thought that my earlier post would be my final Whitney Houston post, but after seeing her funeral on CNN, I just can't stop there. Today I heard sirens near my home and discovered that one of my neighbors had been found dead on his sofa. He had been there for 3 days. His daughter had been worried and had asked the family that lived next door to him to go check on him. Such a terrible sad situation. Life is truly short. You just never know the day, nor the hour that you may check out or Christ may be HERE instead of just "coming back" as we are always told.
Today the world saw how we as African Americans have CHURCH. Our praise holds nothing back. It's beautiful in it's purest form. For some this will be the closest they get to going to church or ever experiencing an African American Baptist church. It is by far the most amazing thing to me when people can speak so well of you at your Homegoing... When your love, belief and relationship with God surpasses all the negative things, you know that you've done your part. The song that most young Christian Children sings says "This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine!" Despite the negative life experiences... despite the critics, this woman had a light that shined. Our lights all tend to get dim at times but the point is to never let it blow out. In the end of the day, her mistakes are covered under His grace and mercy. Her life and her death and her Homegoing service has certainly touched someone on this day. The folks at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, NJ came to have CHURCH! From moving songs by Kim Burrell, Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly, The Winans, Alicia Keys, etc. to moving speeches from Ray Watson, Kevin Costner and Tyler Perry, the service was all around beautiful. Sure, even Satan knew the Lord, but it's all about having a true and meaningful relationship with Him. After watching this and even from my knowledge of her, it confirms that Whitney certainly may be in Heaven amongst other greats singing praises to our Lord and Savior. I've always imagined that Heaven has the best choir ever imaginable with musicians playing golden instruments and singers holding golden mics.
Whitney's last song shared with us ont the Thursday before she passed was "Jesus Loves Me" with Kelly Price during the week of pre-Grammy events. Yes Whitney, Jesus loves you, me and us all! My heart goes out to the Houston family and any other family out there grieving the loss of a loved one. Quite frankly, we watch in awe but the pain and agony experienced at that moment isn't anything worth wanting to share. It is offly generous of the Houston family for giving us a peek at Whitney's Homegoing service and into their lives.
To those reading this and to myself, I say, strengthen your relationship with Christ so that when your time is up and you've breathed your last breath, souls have been reached through your life, God can receive all the glory and honor, praise can be given to Him for sharing an angel and everyone can shout not because you are gone but in celebration for your glorious reunion with Him. As Pastor M. Winans said, "Let the church say AMEN." Be blessed!
