Not that I've been to a million chicken and waffle places, but let me be the first to tell you that this one by far was the worst. I've been to Chicago's Famous Chicken and Waffles and Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles in Pasadena (Yeah yeah! I know that the L.A. location is better). When I base my ranking on total ambiance, Chicago's Famous Chicken and Waffles wins since there is ample amount of seating and it doesn't look like a diner or a quick stop chicken joint. Both Chicago and Roscoe's have table service. Mama's Chicken and Waffles in New Orleans was by far the lowest in ranking in all categories.
Upon entering Mama's Chicken and Waffles I should have known something was wrong since it was a Sunday and only 2 other people were in the restaurant. I mean let's face it... after church you are always starving and you would expect that by 11am any breakfast place would be swarming with people. The restaurant was no larger than someone's den. There was a long bar, 2 bar style tables and 2 regular round tables. No one greeted us when we entered. We seated ourselves and then realized that we would have to go to the counter to order. The menu didn't have many options but included strange varieties like garlic or BBQ chicken and waffles. My self, my bro, sister, nephew and my bro's girlfriend all decided to go with the regular 4 pc chicken wings and waffles while my mom ordered eggs, bacon and grits. The drink dispenser was on the top of the bar counter and was out of several flavors. I ordered the special fruit punch but didn't receive it for a while b/c the cashier claimed that she gave it to me already. The floors of the restaurant were extremely slippery perhaps due to grease or too much soap when mopping. There were several flies in the place that didn't make things any better.
I'm a big fan of quotes and I did like the fact that there were quotes on the wall of the restaurant. One quote said, "Tears are like drawers you don't show them to everybody."
The chicken wings were huge, fresh out of the grease, and garnished with parsley. Sadly, the wings had too much breading and weren't seasoned well. The waffles came out about 5-10 minutes later and were unique since they had a fleur de lis imprinted on them but they were just your average waffles that anyone could make with a waffle maker.
By far the best thing I had at Mama's was the fruit punch. I don't know if they are lacking since they are fairly new to the game compared to the other chicken and waffle establishments I've been too, but this place needs some work. If this place lasts long enough, I may come back in a few years to give it a second try b/c everyone deserves a second chance. Next on my list for chicken and waffle restaurants is Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles in Atlanta, GA... I can't wait.
